Why you should have a good coin holder

Whether you are a coin collector, a coin enthusiast or an investor who has a portfolio of coins you will want to keep and display your collection in the best possible means. You will also want to store your collection in a manner that doesn't damage or erode the coins in any way. A coin holder is the perfect way to do this, and coin holders come in a great many different varieties, shapes and sizes from the ring coin holder that is only a tiny bit bigger than the coin to an ornate display cabinet that is lit perfectly to accentuate the beauty of your rare coins.

For showing or storage

Whether you intend to show your coins in the coin holder or even if you need to transport them, it is vital that you use an air tight and durable holder that will protect them from the elements and from any knocks or bumps. If you simply throw your collection in packing cases there is a very good chance they are going to suffer a little more damage than they probably already have.

The advantages of slabbing your coin

One of the most recent methods of coin storage is slabbing your coin. This is the act of encasing a coin in hard, clear plastic. As such it becomes perfectly air tight but still elegant enough to be shown and displayed whenever and wherever you like. By slabbing your coins you never need worry again about them sustaining any irreparable damage. This is perfect for storing pristine condition coins so that they will not get damaged or depreciate in value. Simply by slabbing a coin it can increase in financial value.

Displaying your coin collection

Once you've slabbed your coins or used any other form of effective coin holder you may decide you want to display them, and why wouldn't you? Coin collections are a sight of beauty especially shiny gold and silver coins with ornate and incredible designs. You can purchase specialist coin collection cabinets that are designed with the sole purpose of displaying coin collections. These have more than adequate lighting as well as being designed in such a manner that the display areas of the cabinet are perfectly sized for your collection. Putting coins in a normal cabinet can make them appear small and your display unimpressive, so be careful of the size and style of the cabinet you choose.

The wallet or folder

If you are just starting out and perhaps your coins aren't in pristine condition then you may want to consider the use of a coin folder or a coin wallet. Not everyone can afford to start off their collection with hundreds of mint condition coins and it is not uncommon to see coins from an early collection replaced with newer and better examples. The wallet or folder may not offer the same level of protection against the elements or against general damage but they do protect your cons to some extent. They are a superb way to start and they also enhance the appearance of your collection.

Getting the right size

All coin holders are obviously available in different sizes to accommodate the different sizes and shapes that coins have been produced in; you should always try to make sure that your coins will fit snugly into their holder. If the holder is too loose your coin will get bumped around, possibly causing damage whereas if the holder is too tight you will damage the coin trying to cram it into a space that is simply too small.
